The mission of the United Methodist Church is to make disciples of Jesus Christ (Matthew 28:19). Disciples are those who are actively growing deeper in love of God and neighbor (Matthew 22:36-40). This is the benchmark of maturing disciples.

There are many ways that individuals grow deeper in love of God and neighbor: basic Christian practices such as prayer, scripture study, sharing one’s faith, worship, etc. John and Charles Wesley talked about such practices as means of experiencing God’s grace in a profound way, and will lead people to deeper love of God and neighbor. A church that is healthy and growing is a church that is helping people grow in piety and devotion to God and in compassion and mercy to others.

Get People Out of the Grandstands in Church

The resources on this page will help church leadership teams find ways of growing and forming disciples in love of God and neighbor, so that the church itself will grow in health and strength to make new disciples. Disciple formation is a life long process that moves a person from one level of discipleship to the next, growing deeper as a disciple of Jesus Christ. Disciple formation moves a church from thinking about “us” to reaching out to “others.”
